For many years I have wanted to write a book. I have recently toyed with the idea of writing a book for new Christians, and especially new Reformed Christians. I want this book to be something that I can put in their hands that will give them the basics of the faith and their new life in Christ. Many years ago I started something like this (written from a non-Reformed perspective) and I still think I have it lying around in my files somewhere.
Some of the topics I would like to cover in this book are:
- Scripture Reading: Importance and Value
- Prayer: Our communication of petition and praise to God
- Service: Living a life for others
- Worship: What it is and what it is not
- Sacraments: God's means of grace in our lives
- Discipleship: Pouring what you have learned into the life of another
- Church Membership: Learning and growing with God's people
- Book Reading: Standing on the shoulders of the giants
I am sure there are other topics that should be included in a project such as this (please offer some in the comments section). What I do
not want this book to be is a lengthy theological project that would be lost on a new convert to the Reformed faith. My goal is to remain as practical as possible throughout the work while providing a solid theological foundation at the same time. Perhaps this kind of material would be helpful to some who might be fearful of reading a book written by a "scholar".
Certainly I am not one that has the educational credentials to engage in this kind of work but I have had the opportunity to talk about these issues many times in the last 12 years or so, ever since I was introduced to the Reformed faith. I would like to offer my gleanings of these past twelve years to those who, like me at the beginning, encounter many questions.
Again, if you would be so kind as to offer suggestions or other relevant ideas I would be most appreciative.
