It's about 2:30 in Dallas at the PCA General Assembly and we are discussing the issue of women's deacons here. I thought I would just give quick overview of what is actually happening here to alleviate any potential confusion.

An overture has been offered to the General Assembly asking that a study committee be formed to address the issue of women serving in diaconal ministries. That is important - at this time we are not debating whether or not women should or should not be allowed to serve as deacons, we are debating whether or not a study committee should be formed.

Thus, some of the particular exegetical/theological issues aren't going to be on the table here, though they may be lightly touched on. This debate has more to do with polity than theology (though I recognize that polity is theologically informed).

At this time our Bills and Overtures committee has recommended that such a committee not be formed. The rationale is that there are "studies" on this matter on both sides of the matter, readily available - i.e. many books have been published which are freely available to all. The Bills and Overtures committee is recommending that we avail ourselves of this and are pointing out that there are other means to bring these matters to the assembly.

A minority report, for which Brian Chappell is speaking, asks that we go ahead with the formation of the committee, on the grounds that we can get good men, recognized by the church, and get them in the same room, discussing the matter, and let their findings be used to guide any future overtures.

I'll keep you updated later. Thus far, the majority and minority reports have been presented and they have been very cordial and respectful to one another, and very complementary toward each other. The only hiccup is that a point of order was respectfully raised to rule the minority report out of order, but this was voted down and we went ahead with the presentation of the minority report. We'll see how the floor debate goes, but so far, the debate/discussion has been handled well.
