Former house of representatives member, Amb Nkoyo Toyo today declared her intension to contest the 2023 governorship election in Cross River State.
Amb. Toyo who was also a former Nigerian ambassador to Ethiopia made the declaration in Calabar Municipality at Ward 5 of the local government area.
According to her “I came here with a letter which I have passed on to my chairman, indicating my interest to run for the office the governor. Our party is a great party and we must work to make it great again”
The former diplomat who lamented the deplorable situation in the state said
“Here in Cross River State, we can see that our state is no longer working. Our roads are too bad, we can no longer travel between Calabar and Itu, our school fees are too high that we can not pay, there is hunger in the land. We have seen that Nigeria is bleeding and we have come to rescue Nigeria”
Ambassador Toyo who has also been a vocal gender activist for many years, used the opportunity to make case for women in politics.
“Some people have told me madam this is not a woman’s job, It is for the strong men. But I have also told them that it is not for the strong people, it is for those who have the competence to do it. And if you ask me, I have done it before and I will make sure it is done again. That is why I wanted to begin from my ward, once I am done with my ward, I can then go to other LGAs.
The former diplomat emphasized that her campaign will hinge on three Rs which will be Recover, Reset and Reposition. “Some people have said they want to reclaim the state, but I ask, after you have reclaimed, what next? But for us, we know exactly what to do once we are elected” She maintained.
She listed some of the pillars of her campaign development to include, Sustainability, Infrastructure, Human capital development, Economic growth, Security and Public service.
“Everyone knows my competence in public governance, so this is not a matter of if I can do it”
The former lawmaker who enumerated her contributions while serving at the green chambers to include among other things, the establishment of two schools in Ikot Eneobong, employment of over 25 people in federal radio Nigeria, building of several primary health care centers, renovation of markets etc, promised to do more when elected governor.
She challenged other politicians across party lines who have the kind of national and international networks that she has to come out and prove it.
With this, Amb Toyo has become the first female aspirant for the 2023 governorship election in the state.
The event which was witnessed by many party leaders in the state including the state woman leader, chapter chairman, among others, also had in attendance husband of the governorship aspirant, Arc Otu Ita Toyo.
Earlier, the governorship aspirant had visited the chairman of Obutong traditional council, His Royal Etubom Eso Archibong Eso at his residence in Calabar, where the traditional leader prayed her success in the race.
