Some women in Akpabuyo local area have lamented the high rate of maternal mortality and child abuse in the local council.
They regretted that most women in the interior parts of the village find it difficult to access proper healthcare during childbirth, while most of them die in the process.
They also lamented rampant cases of child abuse and high cost of healthcare and pleaded with government to assist them.
The women were addressing issue facing them when a frontline PDP governorship aspirant, Amb. Nkoyo Toyo visited the local council to talk with women about the issues they face in the remote villages of the state.
The women who commended the governorship hopeful for her own style of consultation of visiting them, youths, elders and other group of people against the usual practice of meeting only party Exco and leaders.
Mrs Deborah Bassey a resident of Ikot Edem Eyo, pleaded with Amb. Toyo to prioritize healthcare when elected governor. “Most of our women die in their effort to access healthcare. Many of them at childbirth. It is so sad that successive government have failed to provide this critical infrastructure for us. Please help us when you become governor”
Another woman, Mrs Ruth Nsa pleaded with Amb Toyo to make case for the various issues of rape of minors by some men in the LGA. She said “as a mother, I have been victim where my two daughters were heartlessly raped by a man. I have been in pains and my daughters have been abandoned, yet without justice. Please when you get there, speak for those of us who cannot speak”
In her response, Amb. Toyo who said she was saddened by the development however, promised to prioritize healthcare when elected. “ I am a woman and I have been involve in women activities for over 40 years. When I get the party ticket and eventually become governor. Women’s issues and in particular we will make sure that the issues of maternal mortality and child abuse are dealt with and given priority”
Other women who spoke at the event showered praises on Amb. Toyo for her near perfect representation while she represented the people of Odukpani/Calabar Municipality at the house of representatives, as well as other offices she has held.
They expressed optimism that she will emerge victorious as the PDP governorship flag bearer for the 2023 elections.
