The ambition of Amb. Nkoyo Toyo yesterday received further boost as members of the Nigerian Bar Association overwhelmingly threw their support behind her.

At the annual Bar week held at the Transcorp hotels in Calabar, several lawyers who spoke at the event expressed optimism that if given the opportunity, Amb Toyo will do well.

“The first day I met Amb Nkoyo Toyo was in 2007 at a tribunal. And the lawyer who was asking her questions while she was in the dock wanted to embarrass her. But the way she answered the lawyer rather embarrassed him. When he realized that Amb. Toyo was even older than him in the Bar, he became more embarrassed. The way Amb. Toyo answered the questions that were thrown at her, showed that she was not just intelligent but full of wisdom” Mba Ukweni, SAN said while eulogizing the former diplomat.

Amb. Toyo was one of the keynote speakers at the annual event of the Bar profession, with the theme We The People.

The former Nigerian ambassador to Ethiopia who spoke about National consensus on women inclusion in democracy said “until our society see that we need gender equality in addressing some of the gender issues in our society, then we ourselves are not ready for the change we want to see in the society”

She stressed the need for more women inclusion in democracy and advocated for fundamental human right for all, irrespective of gender.

“ the first thing we learnt as lawyers is that, fundamental human right of all must be respected irrespective of gender”

Many of those who spoke, eulogized the eloquence of the former diplomat and her intelligence in delivering the topic, stressing that she will be a leader that will secure the future of the state as well as protect the right of women.

Ambassador Toyo’s style of party and community engagement has continued to generate discussion amongst major political power brokers across party line, with several of her contenders attempting to duplicate her style.

She remains a major contender for the office of governor of Cross River State under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party.
