The Governor of Cross River State Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu has charged the national council on climate change to expedite action in the approval of carbon market framework in other to ensure that the nation benefits from the global carbon credit fund.
Governor Otu gave the charge, Monday when the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe paid him on a courtesy visit at his temporary office in Calabar.
While commending the council for an impressive job so far, the governor emphasized the need for the NCCC to expedite action on the approval of the carbon market framework in the country in order for the Memorandum of understanding signed between the Cross River State Government at the COP28 in Dubai to be able to take effect.

The Cross River State governor who reiterated his desire to preserve and restore the rich mangrove of the state to an enviable height hinted that preservation of the incredible biodiversity of the state is one project that he is committed to, as demonstrated when he signed a Memorandum of Understanding during the United Nations Conference of Parties COP28, in Dubai 2023.
He assured the team of the continuous cooperation and partnership with the state. ” this was the reason why we state council on climate change which is made up of very capable and competent people with vast knowledge in the climate change cluster. So far, we have demonstrated immensely our commitment and willingness to promote favorable ecosystem as a state which will in turn protect our rich biodiversity” he submitted.
Earlier, the Director General, National Council on Climate Change Secretariat Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe informed the Governor that the team was in the state for the Hybrid Stakeholders Meeting on Mangrove Restoration, Conservation and Protection.
She said the choice of Cross River was to host the event was because of her leading role in climate change actions on adaptation and mitigation, being the first state in Nigeria to domesticate the Climate Change Law, set up a State Council on Climate Change and State Green Economy Commission.
The Director General congratulated the Governor on his deliberate actions geared towards the preservation and protection as well as other developmental strides in the state.
She pledged the support of council, Dr. Madueke encouraged the Governor to keep the state in the leadership position it currently occuoies by continually taking strides in Climate Change mitigation and adaptation.
Also Speaking, the Director General, Cross River State Council on Climate Change Dr. Edu Effiom applauded the Governor of Cross River State for being a champion in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation action in Nigeria. According to her, the establishment of the legislative framework for Climate Change adaptation and mitigation action in the state through the passing and signing into law of the Cross River State Climate Change Bill, is a testament to the commitment of the governor.
The National Council on Climate Change Secretariat are in the state for a Hybrid Stakeholders Meeting on Mangrove Restoration, Conservation and Protection in Nigeria. The meeting is in collaboration with Cross River State Council on Climate Change.
