A suit brought before the State High Court, Calabar Division, seeking to declare the traditional stool of Etubom Dr . Joseph Okon Edem as the Etubom of Umo Edem Roya house has been dismissed.

Justice Ayade Emmanuel delivered the judgment in a case involving members of the royal house, where some persons, led by Chief Michael Bassey Ekpo, Alphonsus Ekpo, Murphy Adim Hogan and Chief Asuquo Okon had dragged, the current leadership of the royal house to court, demanding among other things, a declaration that the selection and installation of Etubom Joseph Edem as head of the royal family was not properly carried out and as such, should be null and void.

The case which first came up for hearing at High Court 11, of the same State High Court in Calabar was dismissed last year 2021 for lacking in merit. Not satisfied, the plaintiffs again filled another suit at the same State High Court before his lordship, Justice Ayade Emmanuel.

In his ruling, his Lordship described the action of the plaintiff as an abuse of court process and subsequently dismissed the case.

Reacting, Etubom of Umo Edem Royal house, Dr. Joseph Okon Edem applauded the courage of the judge, maintaining that the house will meet and take a decision on the next action on the erring members. “my mission is to build and not to destroy. So we will meet as a larger house and take a decision on what to do with those our brothers who took this house to court. I became Etubom of the house after I was duly selected and installed in the presence of everyone, including those who took us to court. All of them were actively involved in making sure my installation and other ceremonies were successful. I am thankful to God and to my wonderful Exco and the entire house for standing strong on the side of truth. I am very grateful that this matter has been laid to rest” he said

Umo Edem house is one of the royal houses in Efik kingdom with ancestral roots in Àkpabuyo and Calabar south. With this ruling, the long legal tussle against the leadership of the house has been effectively brought to an end.
