The Chairman of Bakwarra Local Government Council in Cross River State, Hon. Theresa Ushie, has been suspended from office for three months by the State Assembly.

This decision follows a petition and resolution submitted by nine out of ten Councilors from the local government council and considered by the State Assembly and other stakeholders.

The Councilors had previously attempted to impeach the Chairman three months ago, citing allegations of corruption and misconduct, abuse of power, and the cessation of Councilors’ salaries, among other issues. They brought their concerns to the State Assembly, as well as to the Governor, his deputy, and the State party chairman.

Following a meeting with stakeholders from the local government area, including Governor Senator Prince Bassey Otu, the Speaker of the State Assembly, the state chairman of the ruling party (APC), and the Councilors, it was resolved that the Chairman would be suspended for three months. This decision was made in accordance with the due process outlined in Section 14 (3) of the Local Government Law 2025 of the State, the Speaker  of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem said.

He added that during the suspension, the Vice Chairman of Bakwarra Council, Hon. Egbung Odama, will serve as the acting Chairman.

Additionally, the State Assembly has set up an investigative committee to look into the allegations raised by the Councilors.
