In recognition of his outstanding contributions to cultural preservation and heritage development, the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has been honoured with the prestigious Cultural Ambassador Award by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.
The award ceremony, held in Abuja, was part of events marking International Museum Day 2025, with the theme, “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities.”
The annual celebration brought together prominent leaders, cultural stakeholders, and heritage advocates to spotlight the evolving role of museums in safeguarding national identity amidst global change.
Delivering the opening remarks, the Hon. Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa Esq., represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Muktar Yawari Mohammed, emphasized the vital role museums play in preserving Nigeria’s diverse history. “Museums are the custodians of our collective history, the keepers of our diverse cultures, and the bridges that connect our past with our future,” she said. “They tell stories of ancient kingdoms, rich traditions, and the resilience of our people — a tapestry of safeguarding cultural heritage for generations to come.”
A highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of Governor Otu for his visionary leadership and commitment to cultural infrastructure, notably the recent renovation of the historic Calabar Museum. The award was received on his behalf by Mrs. Sarah Archibong, Special Adviser, Cross River State Liaison Office, Abuja.
In her acceptance remarks, Mrs. Archibong conveyed the Governor’s appreciation, quoting him as saying: “We look forward to continued collaboration in shaping the future of museums in a rapidly changing world.”
