An aspirant for Calabar Municipality/Odukpani federal constituency, Hon. Oqua Edet Oqua has met with councilors from Calabar Municipality local government area.
According to Hon. Oqua, the meeting was to consult them on his aspiration to represent the federal constituency at the house of representatives.
“I came here because I have a lot of respect for the legislature. I came because I am part of you and have been a member of the house of assembly in the state” he told the councilors.
Hon. Oqua who described himself as the best aspirant among those contesting said “Among all those who have indicated interest to run for this election, I believe that I stand a better chance. I am one of you. I know how the legislature work, having been a member of the state house of assembly.
“If by the grace of God, I am given the opportunity at the green chamber, I will not need a magic to know what is due you. And for me to even succeed, I believe I must create some level of synergy between myself and all of you”
Hon. Oqua who is the immediate past Commissioner for Transportation and Marine Services maintained that having been around for awhile, couple with his knowledge of the political atmosphere of the federal constituency, he was the right person to represent the constituency.
He emphasized that with the introduction of the INEC’s new technological tools line the BVAS, as a means of curbing electoral malpractices, it was important that the party put forth it’s best candidates to contest the 2023 elections so as to secure victory.
On why he is in the race, the former state lawmaker said “One may ask, why are you in this race, firstly it is because I am from Odukpani and if we must go to equity we must go with clean hands”.
Hon. Oqua who went down memory lane to remind the councilors how in 2019, he was pressured to step down his aspiration for Hon. Eta Mbora from Calabar municipality, despite clear indication of his victory, said it was only necessary for the purpose of fairness and equity for Odukpani to be given the opportunity.
He said as an experienced lawmaker at the level of the state, given opportunity he will do very well for the federal constituency.
Speaking unbehalf of the councilors, deputy leader of the council, Hon. Louis Lucas described Hon. Oqua as a senior colleague in the legislative family and one who is well known in terms of his capacity and ability to deliver on any given assignment.
“I want it to be on record, that what is just and fair should be allowed to play. We at Calabar municipality have had our own 12 years. It is only proper that we allow our brothers to have their own turn. Anything other than that, will not be good for us” said Hon. Lucas.
He described Hon. Oqua as not just the right man for the job but one who can conveniently win election for the All Progressives Party in the state.
On the insinuation that since the governorship ticket may likely go to Odukpani LGA, Calabar municipality should be allowed to continue at the house of representatives, Hon. Lucas dismissed the argument as weak, insisting that the governor is for the entire state and not that of Odukpai LGA.
He maintained that any other arrangements apart from that, will be a wrong signal for generations unborn.
