The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has announced the immediate closure of two off-campus female hostels—Al-Ansar Indabo—located at UDB Road and Hotoro in Kano metropolis over violations ranging from immoral behaviour to unauthorised night movement.
The development was disclosed in a statement released Monday by the university’s Vice President for Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba.
According to the statement, the university has withdrawn its approval for the hostels due to violations of its code of conduct and failure to comply with standards for student accommodation.
The statement read, “I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students’ hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro.”
He explained that non-compliance had led to various infractions, including reported cases of immoral behaviour, poor water and electricity supply, student violence, unauthorised movement at night, and the sharing of facilities with unknown tenants.
“These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students, “ he said.
The university, therefore, directed all affected students to vacate the hostels immediately after the conclusion of the current semester examinations and warned them against further association with the facilities for their own safety and security.
“Management is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure total compliance with the directive, “ the statement added.
Students and parents were advised to contact the Office of the Vice President, Campus Life, via the official email address — vp-campuslife@maaun.edu.ng — for guidance on approved and secure hostel options.
The university warned that it would not take responsibility for any consequences arising from non-compliance with the directive.
Meanwhile, Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, President of the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria has clarified the closure of the Al-Ansar Indabo hostel over non-compliance with the university rules.
In a statement on Tuesday, Professor Israr explained that the university Management found it necessary to take the action due to non-compliance with the university’s rules and regulations governing the operation of private hotels.
“Despite issuing queries to the owners of the affected hostels, they failed to comply with our rules and regulations, we have no option but to take this appropriate action.
“Non-compliance resulted in several unwanted situations and activities within the hostel, including poor water and power supply. These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students.
“We have to protect the reputation that we built for over 13 years, we stand by ethics to ensure good conduct and welfare of our students”. The statement added
