As part of their Light the World celebration, some members of the Christian denomination, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Calabar Nigeria Stake, have donated blood to the Hematology Department of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in Calabar.
The church said it was part of their contribution and show of love as exemplified by Jesus Christ to help members of the society who may be in need of the blood.
Speaking with journalists in Calabar President of the Calabar Nigeria Stake, Mr Alex Nkoro said “We follow the example of our master, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who freely gave his blood and life for all so that the world might be save. The event of Light the World is taking place at this same time at our different churches around the world, but for us here in Calabar, we have chosen to celebrate it by coming out here to donate blood to those who may be in need of it” Although he couldn’t confirm if the event will be a yearly one, he however said a total of 50 persons will be donating.
Some of the donors who spoke separately with newsmen expressed joy over the opportunity to donate blood. One of the donors, Mr. Okon Thompson said “ I feel excited to be here to donate blood. None of us was compelled, we came out voluntarily, filled the form and freely donated. We are here because we want to obey the instructions from our leaders who have also taught us on the need to save lives and be a light to the world.
Head of the Donor Clinic of UCTH and Consultant Hematologist, Dr. Bassey Bassey said the hospital was excited at the gesture of the church. “we are grateful to the church. We can say this is a dream come true. Before now we use to go to churches, clubs and other social organizations to ask them to come and donate blood but without any good response. We are happy because this church came to us on their own”
Explaining further the importance of the gesture by members of the church, Dr. Bassey said “ bloods donated to the hospital here is usually preserved to help save life when the need arises. Sometimes during operation, accident or other medical emergencies”
He said the bloods donated will be screened and passed through many processes to ensure it is safe to be used on another person.
He called on more organizations, groups and person to voluntarily walk into the hospital and donate blood to safe more lives.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Christian denomination operating in several countries around the world. The Church also have branches spread across Cross River State.
