… CRSHA Speaker, Ayambem calls for calm

By Jimmy Jackson

The University of Cross River State workers on Wednesday protested over non-payment of their salaries by the management of the institution.

The workers said  they had not received their salaries in over three months, adding that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Angba had ignored them when they were having financial difficulties.

Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, speaker, Cross River State House of Assembly, while addressing the protesters in Calabar, urged them to be calm and continue in doing their jobs with dedication and passion.

Ayambem assured them that the House of Assembly has heard their plea and will take appropriate action while seeking intervention from the state governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, and Professor Angba.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor has berated workers’ union, alleging that they incited their members to take to the streets.

The VC said there was no need for the protest against management as management has begun to pay the backlog.

“I don’t know what they are going to ask for because salaries are being paid,” he said, explaining that the leadership of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), NASU, NAT and SSANU in the institution decided to back out of the protest since the backlog was being paid.” He added.
