The 2024 FASU games kicks off in Lagos on Saturday, September 21 in spectacular style with thousands of athletes across Africa converging at the University of Lagos Sport Center, Akoka. Nigeria.
The 11th African University Games which is co-hosted by the Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), making history as the very first universities cohosting games in Africa.
Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University in her addressed welcomed all to the city of Lagos, a multi ethnic city, showcasing the vibrant sports culture within the region, a melting point of people from diverse nationalities, urging all participants to enjoy the games in unity and love.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, said FASU Games offer an opportunity to showcase the values of unity, respect, and cooperation that will shape the future of our dear continent.
“So as the Games begin, remember that your greatest victory lies not just in winning but in growing as leaders, uniting as one, and representing Africa with pride.
“Compete, network, and excel, because together, we are the future of Africa.” She added
The competition hosting body, Federation of Africa University Sports, FASU, which serves as the medium for students in Africa from different tertiary institutions to compete in different sporting events across the continent.
Participating countries in the FASU 2024 are Angola, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Mauritius, Ghana and Nigeria as the host.
The sporting events for the FASU 2024 are football, athletics, badminton, chess, judo, swimming, handball, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, volleyball and basketball.
Dignitaries at the events were Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, Represented by Mrs Ikana Mbora, President of FASU, Ashraf Sobhy, President of WAUG, Mr Ibrahim Tanko Shaibu, President of NUGA, Dr. Engr. Muhammad Bawa, VC of LASU Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, VC of Unilag, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, Pro chancellor of Unilag Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN, and Chancellor of LASU Prof. Gbolahan Elias SAN, amongst others.
