Mr. Effiong Nyong, a veteran journalist has been elected as the new chairman, African Democratic Congress, Cross River State chapter.
Mr. Nyong who was elected alongside other officials at the state congress of the party held at the party Secretariat in Calabar, promised to immediately embark on membership drive so as to grow the ADC in the state.
Responding to questions if his party will field candidates in the upcoming 2023 general elections, Mr. Nyong answers in the affirmative. “we will certainly field candidates in all elective offices, from the state to the national assembly, including the position of the state governor. Our desire is to do things differently.
“while we understand that politics is a game of numbers, we are also adequately prepared for it. If you look around here you will see some people who came from different interior areas of the state like Boki LGA and the rest. So we are ready, but apart from that we will ensure that we will immediately embark on aggressive membership drive to bring in more people”
According to the new state chairman of ADC, “it is rather sad that at different times the both big political parties have at one point or the other described themselves as being the largest political party in Africa. But if you look at the last election in the state here, the current governor got elected with only about 300 thousand votes. That means they are truly not the biggest party in Africa or even Nigeria. So that is what we will leverage upon and grow our party by talking to more young people to get involve. Here we have a lot of young people who are vibrant and ready to work” he said.
Mr. Nyong who has over thirty years experience as a journalist served as the pioneer General Manager of Calabar based Sparkling 92.3 FM.
