Nigeria’s table tennis star, Quadri Aruna, suffered an early exit at the maiden WTT Star Contender Chennai in India after a 3-0 loss to Chinese Tapei player and world no. 58, Feng Yi-Hsin in the round of 32 on Friday, March 28, 2025.

Aruna outing was stunned by 22-year-old (13-11, 11-8, 11-8) in the second round with the former WTT youth champion curtailing Aruna in their maiden encounter, recording his first win against the highest-ranked African in the world.

Meanwhile, 2025 African Cup champion Omar Assar of Egypt began his campaign at the event with a convincing victory in the first round of the men’s singles at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in India.

Assar was sent home in the second round (round of 16) by South Korea’s Oh Junsung in a 3-1 loss (13-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4) on Saturday.

The final was an absolute classic, as Oh Junsung held his nerve in a tense final against Thibault Poret to lift the Men’s Singles trophy 4-3 (9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-7).

Two players who had exhibited incredible form all week long in Chennai, Oh and Poret played out a mesmerising final on Sunday evening at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Korean star, who joins the list of WTT Star Contender event champions for the first time.
